About the Role
This Junior Accountant position supports the accounting operations of a small, fast-growing construction company specializing in building athletic fields and sports facilities. You will work in a hands-on, project-based environment, gaining exposure to full-cycle accounting, job costing, financial reporting, and construction-specific accounting practices. The role offers the unique opportunity to be trained directly by the controller and to grow into a more senior accounting role over time.
You will collaborate closely with the controller and project managers in a setting that values flexibility and a willingness to assist with a variety of tasks. This is a fully onsite position based in Smyrna, TN, within a team of fewer than 30 employees. Key Responsibilities
- check_circleAssist with maintaining the general ledger, including preparing journal entries and performing account reconciliations
- check_circleSupport month-end and year-end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting
- check_circleTrack and analyze project costs within Deltek accounting and project management software
- check_circleAssist with preparing job cost reports and ensure accurate allocation of expenses to specific projects
- check_circleCollaborate with project managers to monitor job performance, cost variances, and profitability
- check_circleAssist in preparing monthly financial statements and management reports for leadership
- check_circleProcess vendor invoices and support timely and accurate payments to suppliers
- check_circleAssist with customer billing and collections, including preparing invoices and following up on outstanding balances
- check_circleAssist with payroll processing and related reporting requirements
- check_circleSupport audits and financial reviews by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses to inquiries
- check_circleIdentify opportunities for process improvements and help implement stronger internal controls
Requirements
- verifiedDegree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- verifiedAt least 2 years of accounting experience
- verifiedUnderstanding of job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting
- verifiedProficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or Apple Numbers
- verifiedSolid knowledge of GAAP
- verifiedExperience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, reconciliations, general ledger, bookkeeping, and cost accounting
Nice to Have
Experience in a construction or engineering environment with project-based accounting. Familiarity with Deltek or similar accounting and project management software. Experience supporting payroll processing and benefits coordination. Background in cost accounting and project-based financial tracking. Demonstrated ability to identify and suggest process improvements and internal control enhancements. Comfort working closely with a controller and leadership team and growing into increased responsibility over time.
