The Forensic Peer Mentor (FPM) serves as a vital bridge between the DeKalb County Jail and the community, providing specialized peer support to individuals navigating mental illness and co-occurring disorders. This role is rooted in the power of lived experience; the FPM acts as a role model of recovery, using their personal journey to guide peers toward regaining control of their lives and treatment goals.
The position focuses on one-on-one, recovery-focused services that extend beyond the jail walls. From developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) to advocating for housing and behavioral health resources, the FPM ensures a seamless transition for individuals re-entering society. By connecting peers with natural supports and trusted community networks, the role aims to reduce hospitalizations, incarceration, and homelessness while fostering successful community integration.
