The Heart Institute Inpatient Services at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus comprises two high-volume, high-acuity units: the Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (CPCU) and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). Together, these units provide outstanding cardiac care to critically ill and acutely ill children across the Rocky Mountain Region and beyond, serving a diverse population from pre-term infants and neonates with complex disease to adults with congenital heart disease.
The team is defined by a robust commitment to collaboration among a multi-disciplinary staff, including anesthesiologists, cardiologists, intensivists, surgeons, nurses, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, and therapists. The units operate with a shared vision of patient respect, justice, and family inclusion-based care, supported by a dedicated quality improvement and safety platform.
With 40 beds in the CPCU and 22-26 beds in the CICU, the institute offers a unique environment featuring dedicated pediatric cardiac-specialized nurses, active mechanical assist device programs (including VADs and ECMO), and participation in multicenter acute care cardiology registries like PAC3 and PC4.
