The Health Information Services department at Albany Medical Center ensures the integrity and accuracy of the organization's clinical data. This team plays a critical role in supporting the facility's financial health, regulatory compliance, and quality measurement initiatives by translating complex medical records into standardized codes.
The Hospital Coder is a fully remote position dedicated to applying current inpatient coding and classification systems to select appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes. This role is vital for ensuring the organization receives optimal, legally entitled reimbursement while strictly adhering to ethical and legal standards. You will utilize computerized encoding systems to sequence diagnoses and procedures in accordance with ICD-10-CM/PCS, UHDDS, and Medicare guidelines.
In this role, you will serve as a bridge between clinical documentation and external reporting. You will query providers for clarification on conflicting or ambiguous information to ensure data accuracy for reimbursement, value-based purchasing, and patient safety measurement. The position requires a high degree of independence, demanding a focused, distraction-free remote work environment that protects confidential health information. You will actively participate in daily huddles, LEAN problem-solving activities, and coding meetings to foster continuous improvement and professional growth.
Applicants must achieve a score of 80% or above on the required coding assessment. Candidates with new coder experience may be considered if they demonstrate a higher proficiency score. The selection process prioritizes high proficiency in navigating multiple systems, troubleshooting, and maintaining data security.
