This position is vital to maintaining the safety and functionality of Fond du Lac County's highway infrastructure. The role serves as the frontline response for road maintenance, ensuring that travel routes remain clear and secure for the public regardless of weather or season. From clearing snow and applying de-icing materials to performing complex asphalt repairs and managing heavy equipment, the team works to uphold county standards and state regulations.
You will operate a variety of vehicles and heavy machinery, including tri-axle and quad-axle trucks, tractors, mowers, and specialized equipment like motor graders and excavators. Your day may involve manual labor such as shoveling gravel, cutting brush with chain saws, or filling potholes, alongside operating power tools for concrete and asphalt work. Safety is paramount; you will conduct daily vehicle inspections, follow strict traffic laws, and work alongside live traffic in all weather conditions.
The role requires adaptability, as you may be assigned to various garages throughout the county and must be prepared to work overtime, holidays, and extended hours. You will collaborate with mechanics for equipment repairs, maintain accurate records of time and materials, and interact with county officials and the general public with tact and professionalism.
