About the Program

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking enthusiastic trainees for the High School to Highway (H2H) program, a one-year initiative designed for recent or soon-to-be high school and alternative school graduates. This program serves as a gateway to state government careers, offering hands-on experience in highway maintenance, construction, and the broader transportation sector.

Located within the Delivery & Operations Division's Region 3, District 7 Striping Crew in Roseburg, this role provides a unique opportunity to work outdoors as part of a dedicated team. Trainees will learn directly from mentors while contributing to the safety and reliability of Oregon's roadways for the traveling public.

A Day in the Life

As a trainee, you will be an active member of a maintenance crew responsible for repairing and maintaining roads, bridges, signs, and facilities. Your day-to-day activities will vary based on seasonal needs and operational demands, potentially including:

  • Performing manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders.
  • Managing weather-related operations such as snow removal, deicing, and sanding.
  • Setting up traffic control during crashes or emergencies.
  • Maintaining drainage systems, cleaning ditches, and repairing culverts.
  • Clearing brush, mowing grass, and managing roadside vegetation.
  • Repairing guardrails, milepost markers, and fences.
  • Servicing tools and motorized equipment.

The role requires adaptability to work in all weather conditions, on rough terrain, and potentially at extreme heights. You may be called upon for after-hours, weekend, or holiday shifts to address emergency situations. The work involves exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and various environmental factors.

What You Will Learn

This program is built on a foundation of practical, on-the-job training. Trainees will gain expertise in:

  • Basic highway maintenance and striping operations.
  • Safety protocols, job hazard assessments, and maintenance policies.
  • Radio communication and crash/incident response.
  • Work zone traffic control and flagging.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Safe operation and maintenance of highway structures and equipment.
  • Preparation to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Hiring Process & Application Instructions

To apply for this position, candidates must visit the ODOT applicant information website. If you are a current State of Oregon employee, you must apply through your Workday profile.

Required Steps:

  1. Submit Application: Complete the online application or attach a resume. Contact the recruiter via the 'Need help?' section if you require assistance with the application process.
  2. Answer Questions: Complete the required checkbox-style questionnaire before submission.
  3. Finalize Submission: After submitting, you will be prompted to respond to a public records request authorization and a gender identity questionnaire. Current employees will receive these tasks in their Workday inbox.
  4. Veteran Preference: Veterans or Oregon National Guard servicemembers may upload documentation for preference consideration after submission. Do not attach military documents to the initial application.
