This classification participates in INDOT's Engineer Progression Program, progressing from foundational engineering tasks toward independent technical authority through a three-tier model. You will begin as an Engineer Trainee, learning standards and performing tasks under guidance. As you advance to a Licensed Engineer, you will perform independent analyses and project-level decisions with full technical responsibility. Eventually, you may progress to a Senior Engineer role, providing statewide subject matter expertise, leading complex reviews, and mentoring junior staff.
In this role, you will serve as a resource for proposal development and research, ensuring milestones and implementation strategies are established accurately. You will assist supervisors in strategic planning and participate in project reviews to ensure plans reflect scope, field conditions, and sound engineering judgment. Your day-to-day involves coordinating programs, interpreting laws and regulations, and reviewing plans for economic and technical feasibility.
You will assist in developing research and technology roadmaps to improve product quality, reviewing proposals for accuracy and potential implementation. Your responsibilities include organizing and conducting engineering investigations and field observations, as well as assisting in laboratory testing with research-grade equipment. You will also participate in Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs, analyzing field data and reviewing plans for conformance to design criteria.
This position is based in INDOT's Indianapolis District. Candidates with an Engineering degree and a current Engineer in Training (EIT) license, but without a professional license, may be hired at a lower minimum salary and are eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones, including obtaining their Professional Engineering license. Upon obtaining a Professional Engineer license, the salary traditionally starts at an annual salary of $75,010, though this may be commensurate with education or work experience.
