About the Mission

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) is dedicated to maintaining and strengthening the Commonwealth's free public libraries. Our goals include providing statewide and regional programs to improve library services, supporting resource sharing and technology utilization, and delivering specialized services to blind and physically handicapped residents.

About the Role

This position serves as a strategic leader for the Library Advisory and Development Unit. You will supervise and direct staff while overseeing the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program, from budget creation to grant administration and new program development. The role requires coordinating the State Advisory Council on Libraries and providing advisory services to public library directors, trustees, and community groups.

As a member of the agency management team, you will guide the provision of services to special populations, lead preservation and disaster recovery initiatives, and foster partnerships with other state agencies and organizations. You will act as a flexible, future-focused leader who supports and motivates professional employees while managing complex deadlines and details.

Hiring Process

First consideration will be given to applicants who apply within the first 14 days of the posting. The application process includes creating a profile and submitting your qualifications for review.

Equal Opportunity & Culture

The Commonwealth is an Equal Opportunity Employer and an Affirmative Action Employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, veteran status, or any other basis covered by appropriate law. Females, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Research suggests that qualified women, Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) may self-select out of opportunities if they feel they do not meet 100% of the job requirements. We encourage individuals who believe they have the skills necessary to thrive to apply for this role regardless of whether they meet every single listed criterion.
