About the Role

The Hazardous Materials Inspector III serves as a senior technical leader within the City of San Diego, responsible for training and reviewing the work of subordinate staff while providing expert guidance on hazardous materials inspections and training activities. This role is critical for ensuring compliance with complex environmental laws and regulations.

In this position, you will lead the inspection of complex hazardous materials projects and manage environmental site assessments associated with construction. You will play a key role in shaping policy by coordinating correspondence on pending legislation and drafting state or federal regulations. Additionally, you will interpret new regulations to determine their impact on current operations, annually redesign training materials, and assist with investigation and enforcement actions.

Hiring and Application Process

Candidates must submit all required documents electronically with their application, including proof of degree/transcripts and proof of required coursework. If you are unable to attach these documents during submission, they must be sent via fax to (619) 533-3337 or delivered to the Employment Information Center at the City of San Diego Personnel Department.

The screening process utilizes an automated evaluation system to review supplemental questions. Successful candidates will be placed on a list for the next six months. Only those with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted for an interview.

Employment offers are conditional upon the successful completion of all screening processes, which may include confirmation of legal right to work, a pre-employment medical review (including drug and alcohol testing), reference checks, and fingerprinting for a conviction record report. Candidates must notify the Personnel Department of any changes to their contact information to ensure they do not miss employment opportunities.
