The Hazardous Materials Inspector III serves as a senior technical leader within the City of San Diego, responsible for training and reviewing the work of subordinate staff while providing expert guidance on hazardous materials inspections and training activities. This role is critical for ensuring compliance with complex environmental laws and regulations.
In this position, you will lead the inspection of complex hazardous materials projects and manage environmental site assessments associated with construction. You will play a key role in shaping policy by coordinating correspondence on pending legislation and drafting state or federal regulations. Additionally, you will interpret new regulations to determine their impact on current operations, annually redesign training materials, and assist with investigation and enforcement actions.

Possession of HAZWOPER and/or DOT HM-181 Certification. Experience in household hazardous waste collection operations, including operational coordination and ensuring compliance with applicable environmental and safety regulations. Experience in contract oversight, including monitoring contractor performance, reviewing invoices, tracking contract expenditures, and developing scope-of-work language. Grant oversight experience, including preparing grant applications, assisting with budget development, tracking expenditures, and preparing progress and final reports. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including developing and managing complex, interlinked spreadsheets for data tracking, reporting, and analysis.
