About the Role
We are seeking a Gastroenterologist to provide occasional per diem coverage at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center (SJMC) in Longview, Washington. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in an underserved community while serving as a valued member of our gastroenterology services team.
If you are seeking a community-based practice that balances proximity to big-city amenities with access to a multitude of outdoor opportunities, this position is ideal. You will join a 140-member multi-specialty group at a Level III, 346-bed, state-of-the-art, not-for-profit medical center. Our team consists of three Gastroenterologists, two PAs, and a knowledgeable, supportive staff.
A Day in the Life
Our full-time physicians typically work two clinic days, two procedure days, and one administrative day per week, ensuring an excellent work-life balance. Call coverage is 1:4 with a low volume, allowing you to focus on interesting patient pathology without the burnout often associated with high-volume practices.
Living in Southwest Washington
Longview is a relaxing 50-60 minute drive along the scenic Columbia River, north of Portland, Oregon. The area offers a blend of historic charm and modern growth. You can live in a Craftsman house within walking distance of the hospital, or choose housing in Columbia Valley Gardens near the golf course or Columbia Heights, which offers stunning views of the valley, rivers, and mountains. Neighboring communities are also expanding with new housing options.
The region is rich in lifestyle opportunities:
- Nature & Recreation: Proximity to the historic Columbia River, Pacific Coast, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, and numerous local parks. Lake Sacajawea, located directly across from the hospital, features a 4-mile trail perfect for a quick break. Water sports like boating, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing are very popular.
- Community: Longview and neighboring Kelso have a combined population of approximately 110,000 residents. The area features many locally-owned restaurants, coffee shops, brew pubs, and music events, alongside national chains and a robust Farmers Market from April through October.
- Culture: The Cowlitz Indian Tribe, a federally recognized tribe of the Cowlitz people, is headquartered in Longview.
