This position operates on a Monday through Friday schedule from 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM.
The Forklift Material Handler is responsible for the efficient movement of materials within the center, cross-dock, trailers, yard, or work site. This role serves as a critical link in the logistics chain, ensuring that items are received, inspected, and shipped with accuracy and care.
In this position, you will work closely with work orders and supervisor instructions to manage the flow of goods. Your day involves receiving items for shipment, visually inspecting them for identity, quantity, and condition, and segregating any items requiring special handling. You will be responsible for loading and unloading materials onto pallets, trays, racks, and shelves using a forklift or other handling equipment, as well as securing materials into carrier vehicles to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
Beyond physical handling, the role requires attention to detail in documentation. You will complete receiving and shipping documents accurately via ProTrans specifications and utilize mobile scanners to track activities. Proper marking and labeling of all shipments, including special handling instructions, are essential duties. You will also operate machinery such as banding, taping, and sealing units.
Safety is a core component of this role. You are expected to conduct daily safety and equipment checks, follow all safety procedures, and actively contribute to improving the center's safety record. Additionally, you will maintain a clean and orderly work environment and provide feedback to identify continual improvement initiatives that enhance team and company performance.
To succeed in this role, candidates must possess the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Proficiency in reading and writing English is required, with bilingual English/Spanish skills desired in some centers.
Mathematical skills are necessary for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers and multiplying and dividing with tens and hundreds, including operations involving American money, weight, volume, and distance. Candidates must have the reasoning ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed instructions and handle problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
Candidates must be able to use scanning equipment and pass the Protrans Forklift Performance Test. A high school diploma, GED, or 6 months of related experience and/or training is required.
This role involves regular use of hands to handle or feel items, and frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Employees must be able to use both feet and legs to operate a forklift, as well as both hands and arms. The position requires frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception. Employees must also have the hearing ability to detect other forklifts, nearby individuals, and common environmental noises.
The work environment includes regular exposure to extreme outside weather conditions and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
