The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) serves eight member municipalities—Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield, and Windsor—by providing quality water supply, water pollution control, mapping, and household hazardous waste collection. Additionally, the MDC supplies drinking water to portions of Farmington, Glastonbury, East Granby, and South Windsor. The organization is dedicated to maintaining essential infrastructure and ensuring public safety through rigorous engineering and administrative oversight.
This position serves as a vital technical and administrative support role within the MDC, bridging the gap between field operations, engineering planning, and data management. You will be an integral part of a team that ensures the integrity of the District's water and sewer systems, from the initial survey of a construction site to the final drafting of as-built plans.
Your day-to-day work will be dynamic, often shifting between office-based drafting and data analysis and active field inspection. You may find yourself on a construction inspection team, marking out work areas for contractors, monitoring pavement restoration, or assisting in the safe entry of confined spaces like manholes and vaults. Simultaneously, you will manage the digital backbone of these operations by entering utility data into management systems, maintaining records of claims and accidents, and coordinating with state and town officials regarding permit compliance and restoration projects.
A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to the precision of mapping and drafting. You will interpret sketches and field notes to create scaled engineering project plans, ensuring they conform to District standards. This role requires a keen eye for detail as you research land records, determine property dimensions, and compile geographic information for the District's GIS database. Whether you are issuing work orders for "Call Before You Dig" requests, investigating claims against transgressors, or assisting with private property surveys, your work directly impacts the safety and efficiency of the community's infrastructure.
The screening process for this position is rigorous and designed to assess both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Applicants are required to take a written exam followed by a practical exam. A passing score of 70 on the written exam is mandatory to proceed to the practical exam. Candidates must successfully pass both examinations to be referred for an interview with supervision and further point evaluation.
To apply, please visit the MDC careers website at themdc.applicantpro.com. Please note that the MDC only accepts applications through their official website; do not email your resume directly to the organization.
