About the Team

HII's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, including third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation shipbuilders. As the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines, our team operates at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration. We collaborate to build the world's most powerful and survivable naval ships, safeguarding our seas, sky, land, space, and cyber domains.

Our diverse workforce ranges from skilled trades to engineers, software developers, and technical subject matter experts. We are a values and ethics-driven organization that puts people's safety and well-being first, offering a supportive environment where you can build a future.

About the Role

This position serves as an instructor within the Radiological Training for Nuclear Engineers (Article 109 RTNE) program. You will develop and deliver initial and continuing radiological training for nuclear engineers at NNS to support Article 109 qualification. Beyond the classroom, you will prepare and administer retention of knowledge examinations, maintain administrative training records, and implement continuous improvement initiatives for training operations.

In this role, you will design, develop, and test nuclear equipment and systems while conducting research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors. You will study the nuclear fuel cycle to define the most economical uses of material and the safest means of waste product disposal. Your work will also involve radiation transport modeling, statistical analyses, and performance metrics to recommend technology options for system, process, facility, or program improvements regarding safety, performance, efficiency, and costs.

Success in this role requires demonstrating professionalism, leadership, and radiological expertise both inside and outside the classroom. You will create a positive learning environment and encourage a principles-based approach to applying radiological controls. While the role involves significant technical research and instruction, it also requires strong proficiency with MS Office suite, particularly presentation software, as well as experience with Success Factors, CheckBox, and other learning development platforms.

Why HII

Working at HII is more than a job—it is an opportunity to build a future. We are recognized as one of America's top large company employers, offering competitive benefits and valuable educational and training programs for continual career growth at every stage of your career. Our comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision plan choices, on-site health centers, wellness resources, 401K savings plans, life insurance, and tuition reimbursement.
