Centra is seeking board-certified (or board-eligible) emergency physicians to staff our network of four Emergency Departments across the central Virginia region. As part of Centra Medical Group (CMG), a comprehensive network of nearly 600 employed providers, you will join a physician-heavy staffing model that serves a community of 600,000 members across Central and Southern Virginia.
Our network includes Lynchburg General Hospital, a 70K-visit, 54-bed facility currently expanding with a new 65-bed ED and the region's first EmPath Unit for behavioral health; Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, a Level 2 trauma center with high-quality acute MI and stroke certifications; Bedford Memorial Hospital; and Gretna Medical Center, a free-standing ED. The group operates with a collegial culture where all physicians hold equitable standing from day one, with no seniority-based scheduling or opaque pay structures.
You will experience a variety of work settings, ranging from a busy, cross-covered community trauma center to a single-coverage free-standing ER. Shifts are designed to match staffing to patient arrivals, utilizing a "waterfall" scheduling model at Lynchburg General to limit sign-outs. Physicians see patients according to acuity for the first 8 hours of a shift and then "cherry pick" for the last two. The patient load is reasonable, averaging 1.7 to 2.2 patients per hour.
We offer a supportive environment with a months-long orientation period, limited nights, and no solo site coverage. An active nocturnist program decreases the night load for everyone, and nocturnists enjoy the flexibility to create their own schedules. Physicians can opt for days/evenings only, with no scheduled call required. You are guaranteed up to 10 days off per month and alternate between Christmas and Thanksgiving, with a guarantee of 5 days off surrounding your "off holiday."
Lynchburg, VA (population 85,000), offers a safe, family-friendly environment with a low cost of living (17% below the national average) and a mild climate. The area is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring hiking on Sharp Top Mountain or the Appalachian Trail, biking Blackwater Creek, and boating at scenic Smith Mountain Lake. Families enjoy local festivals, orchards, and the Amazement Square Museum. The city features top-tier arts at the Academy Center and minor league baseball with the Lynchburg Hillcats. Travel is convenient via the downtown Amtrak station or the Lynchburg regional airport.
Interested candidates should submit their application to olivia.nelsen@centrahealth.com.
