City Teaching Alliance operates within the education administration programs sector, based in Baltimore, Maryland. The organization partners with American University to deliver a Master's of Arts in Teaching degree designed specifically for urban school environments. This curriculum focuses on practical, hands-on learning that emphasizes literacy and mathematics, while providing dual certification in special education and a specific content area to ensure educators can effectively serve diverse student populations.
The program distinguishes itself through a rigorous, highly selective three-year coaching structure. During the first year, fellows accumulate over 1,500 hours of classroom experience by working alongside host teachers during the day while completing master's coursework at night. In the second year, participants transition to serving as teachers of record, continuing their professional development with ongoing coaching and academic support. This intensive approach results in a high retention rate, with three-quarters of first-year teachers successfully completing the full four-year program. The initiative aims to equip career educators with the necessary tools to become impactful leaders within their school communities.
