WhoWhatWhy.org is a nonpartisan, agenda-free news organization dedicated to producing great journalism in the public interest. We are not left-wing, right-wing, or consensus-seeking; we report the truth, whatever it is. Our approach is defined by open minds, boundless curiosity, and a willingness to dig deep beneath the surface, refusing to back away from pressure by powerful institutions or groupthink.
As a nonprofit, we are not funded by billionaires and do not accept corporate advertisements. Instead, we rely on skilled volunteers to build our organizational infrastructure. We value all levels of experience, welcoming young students, vibrant retirees, and professionals from all walks of life to join our far-flung, diverse team.
We are seeking a gifted Editorial Manager to help our rapidly growing news organization build structure and process. This role is designed for someone with the personality, creative problem-solving skills, and leadership abilities to continuously tackle new challenges and opportunities. You will partner with a team of smart, talented individuals committed to our mission.
In this position, you will manage the editorial team to ensure news production happens on time, accurately, and to the highest standard. You will analyze current processes to identify weaknesses, define complicated tasks, set deadlines, and delegate work while keeping the "big picture" in mind. Additionally, you will collaborate with Marketing, Creative, and Operations departments to ensure consistent messaging throughout the organization.
This is a volunteer, part-time, flexible opportunity with the possibility of compensation as we grow. We ask for a minimum commitment of 10–15 hours a week. You will work remotely on your own schedule, communicating mostly through Slack and email with a global team.
We are looking for candidates who are genuinely familiar with our mission and work. Please do not apply if you are only looking for paid employment.
To apply, send your resume and a customized cover letter. Your application must clearly state your understanding that this is a volunteer position. If there is no option to attach a cover letter, please send it directly to hr@whowhatwhy.org.
Please note: We do not review mass submissions. Also, our response emails sometimes end up in spam folders, so please be sure to check them.
We value a stimulating environment where you can channel your passion and learn the nuts and bolts of nonprofit operations. We offer a flexible, part-time basis for you to develop new skills, gain valuable experience, and make a difference while having fun.
