About the Role
This position offers a pathway to proficiency in operating tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and straight trucks, through comprehensive education and skills development. Beyond driving, the role encompasses essential non-driving duties such as forklift operation and dock work, ensuring a holistic understanding of freight logistics.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Your day will involve a blend of operational and customer-facing tasks. You will perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections, hook and unhook trailers, and secure freight using various tools and supplies. The role requires handling freight with motorized and manual equipment, verifying documentation, and complying with hazardous material regulations.
Communication is key; you will follow dispatch instructions regarding delays or equipment issues and interact directly with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs. Additionally, you may be asked to collect checks, provide sales leads, and perform road driver or freight handler duties as operationally necessary.
Working Conditions
This role involves driving day and night on all types of roads and in all weather conditions. You will be exposed to noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes, and hazardous materials. Hours may vary based on operational needs, and the physical demands include lifting hand freight up to 100 pounds, as well as bending, twisting, and climbing in and out of trucks.
