The Investment Office manages the New York Public Library's $1.9 billion endowment, a critical financial engine that provides ongoing support for the Library's annual operating budget. While the Library receives substantial funding from the City of New York, the endowment's spending ensures long-term stability. The portfolio is invested through external managers across a diverse range of asset classes, including domestic and international equities, marketable alternatives, private capital, real assets, and fixed income.
Reporting directly to the Chief Investment Officer, the Director of Investment Operations is a senior individual contributor tasked with developing a strategic vision for best-in-class operational infrastructure. This role is pivotal to the institutionalization of the Investment Office within a lean, flat team environment. The Director will serve as the operational backbone for a global, multi-asset-class portfolio, managing performance and risk analysis, operational due diligence, fund data management, and the reconciliation of investment processes.
The ideal candidate will not only maintain existing workflows but also drive innovation by identifying, piloting, and operationalizing AI tools to enhance data capture, analytics, and reporting efficiency. This position requires a partner who can bridge the gap between the Investment Team and internal departments such as Finance, Technology, and Procurement, ensuring seamless execution of subscriptions, capital calls, and cash management.
This role is designed for growth and impact. Within the first month, you will immerse yourself in the existing performance, risk, and document management systems while building relationships with external vendors and the internal Finance team. By the three-month mark, you will have a deep understanding of the portfolio strategy and will begin assessing the strengths and weaknesses of current operational processes, participating in due diligence on pipeline managers.
Looking toward six months and beyond, you will take full ownership of the operational due diligence process and the management of all portfolio systems. You will be expected to recommend and implement process improvements, potentially through vendor changes or increased reporting efficiency, ensuring the office's approach to data quality and system integration evolves alongside the landscape of AI and technology in institutional investment management.
