Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) serves as Atrium Health's flagship academic medical center in Charlotte and the quaternary referral hub for the Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. As the region's only Level I Trauma Center and a transplant center for heart, kidney, pancreas, and liver, CMC provides the highest level of cardiovascular care across the Carolinas. The hospital is currently expanding with a major 12-story advanced care facility scheduled to open in spring 2027, featuring 448 patient rooms and 38 operating rooms.
CMC is one of North Carolina's five Academic Medical Center teaching hospitals, training over 200 physicians and serving as a regional campus for Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, with over 50 years of experience, is one of the Southeast's largest cardiac programs, home to the region's only heart transplant center and pediatric heart surgery program.
The Structural Heart Imaging Team operates within a high-volume environment, performing over 450 TAVR procedures, 70+ mitral interventions, and 300+ left atrial appendage occlusion cases annually. The team utilizes state-of-the-art equipment, including the latest Philips echo systems and Siemens cardiac CT and MRI scanners, while actively participating in major clinical trials and research opportunities.
