The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General, represents the state, its agencies, and elected officials while defending the rights of North Carolina citizens. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal matters. Its structure includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs' and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.
The Criminal Justice Standards Section is part of the Training and Standards Division, which is composed of four major units: the N.C. Justice Academy (with East and West campuses), the Criminal Justice Standards Section, the Sheriffs' Standards Section, and Private Protective Services. This consolidated team works to ensure and advance the competence and integrity of criminal justice professions in North Carolina. The Division provides coordinated staffing support to various commissions and services, aiming to minimize duplication and effectively utilize resources within the criminal justice system.
As a Criminal Justice Specialist/Investigator III, you will conduct investigations into alleged or suspected violations of Administrative Rules by applicants and officers certified through Criminal Justice Training and Standards. Working on behalf of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission, your work directly influences decisions regarding possible sanctions. This role requires the accurate application of rules, laws, and regulations governing the certification and ongoing minimum standards for all criminal justice officer categories.
Your day-to-day involves gathering and reviewing court records, police reports, and evidence; interviewing applicants, officers, and witnesses; and preparing detailed investigative reports. You will work closely with certification staff, including program administrators for law enforcement, correctional, juvenile justice, and campus police programs. A key component of the role is providing testimony when cases are presented to commission committees in formal settings, as well as appearing in court proceedings overseen by the Office of Administrative Hearings and appellate courts during subsequent appeals.
To apply, you must list all work history and credentials directly on the online application form; using terms like "See Resume" or "See Attachment" will result in an incomplete application. Cover letters are highly encouraged but not required. If you have foreign degrees, you must attach verification of degree certification, such as an evaluation from an organization like World Education Services, to receive credit.
The selected candidate will be subject to a background investigation. For questions or assistance, contact the Human Resources team at Recruiters@ncdoj.gov.
