This position is a vital component of our Investigations Division, operating under the general supervision of a Sergeant or Lieutenant. You will be assigned to either the General Crimes Unit or the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, where you will play a key role in investigating adult and juvenile criminal activity, including crimes against persons, property, drugs, and other specialized areas.
As an Investigator, you will perform intermediate protective service work that goes beyond standard patrol duties. Your day will involve a dynamic mix of fieldwork and analytical tasks, from securing and processing crime scenes to collecting and preserving physical and digital evidence. You will establish rapport with crime victims, interview witnesses and offenders, and manage confidential informants while strictly adhering to legal requirements and agency policies.
A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to preparing cases for prosecution. This includes collaborating with prosecutors, presenting findings to grand juries, and providing credible testimony in District and Superior Courts. You will also engage with the community through outreach efforts, delivering presentations at schools and public forums to build trust and understanding.
Candidates must possess a High School diploma or equivalent and have completed the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). A minimum of three years of law enforcement experience is required, with patrol experience preferred. Applicants must hold an appropriate North Carolina driver's license and be prepared to maintain all required certifications, including annual firearms qualification and in-service training mandated by the Sheriff's Office, the State, and CALEA standards.
