About the Team

The Maine Department of Labor's Bureau of Unemployment Compensation is dedicated to protecting Maine's Unemployment Trust Fund. Our mission involves ensuring the integrity of the unemployment system by investigating potential benefit overpayments, whether they result from accidental errors, misunderstandings, or intentional misrepresentation. We are a team of professionals committed to fairness, accuracy, and upholding the state motto, "Dirigo" (I lead), by providing essential services to Mainers.

About the Role

We are seeking three detail-oriented Wage Fraud Investigators to join our team. This role is critical for determining the cause and severity of overpayments and validating the legitimacy of claims, including investigations into potential identity theft. As an investigator, you will review unemployment claims and employer-provided wage audits to distinguish between unintentional mistakes and fraudulent activity. You will be responsible for writing clear, accurate eligibility determinations based on your findings and defending these decisions in appeal hearings. The position requires a deep understanding of the entire Unemployment Claims process, from Claims Entry to Eligibility Adjudications.

Day in the Life

Your work will involve analyzing complex or incomplete information to make well-reasoned, defensible decisions. You will conduct in-depth interviews, review identity documents uploaded to the ReEmployME system, and perform in-person document reviews. A key part of your role is communicating findings clearly and confidently, both in written reports and oral presentations. While the position is currently remote, it will transition to a hybrid model requiring at least one day per week in the office after successful completion of training. Occasional statewide travel may be required.

Hiring Process

Questions regarding this position should be directed to Paul Jerome at Paul.L.Jerome@maine.gov. If you are a current State of Maine employee, please submit your application through the internal process using the Find Jobs report in PRISM. Seasonal employees without PRISM access should apply through the State's career page and indicate their prior State employment. If you are unable to complete the online application, please contact the Human Resources representative listed on the job opening for assistance with an alternative submission method.

Our Culture & Commitment to Diversity

Maine State Government embraces a culture of respect and awareness. We are committed to creating a strong sense of belonging for all team members and ensuring an inclusive environment for applicants of all backgrounds, including diverse race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, religion, age, ancestry, national origin, and familial status. We believe that many skills and backgrounds can make people successful in this role. Research shows that people from historically excluded communities often hesitate to apply unless they check every box; we encourage you to apply regardless and let us know how your lived experience and passion set you apart. Reasonable accommodations are provided to qualified individuals with disabilities upon request.
