The City of Jacksonville operates as a major government administration entity headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. As the largest city by area in the continental United States, it functions as a rapidly growing metropolitan hub in Northeast Florida, serving a population of approximately one million residents. The organization manages civic operations, public services, and local governance for its diverse community.
The municipality utilizes a strong mayor form of government where leadership is established through direct public election. Residents vote for a mayor and a nineteen-member City Council, which consists of five at-large members and fourteen members representing specific districts. This structure ensures local representation across the city's various neighborhoods while maintaining centralized administrative authority.
Current leadership is provided by Mayor Donna Deegan, who holds the distinction of being the first female mayor in the city's history. She also serves as the ninth mayor since the 1968 consolidation of the Duval County and City of Jacksonville governments. This historical framework continues to guide the city's administrative operations and strategic direction as it manages its extensive geographic footprint and growing population.
