The Counsel serves as a senior member of the Senator's team, acting as the office's primary legal expert and point person for specific legislative matters. In this capacity, you will provide high-level legal advice and counsel to the Senator on complex policy issues, conducting in-depth research on legislative concepts and leading the development of policy positions. You will oversee all legislative initiatives within your field of expertise, ensuring the Senator's policy and budget priorities are advanced through strategic formulation and effective execution.
Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, you will manage the Senator's policy team, directing legislative and policy work to ensure responsiveness to the Senator's needs. Your day-to-day involves advising on rules and budgetary matters, analyzing existing and proposed legislation, and drafting amendments. You will also staff the Senator during formal Senate sessions, brief them on key issues prior to meetings and caucuses, and convene stakeholders to persuade them regarding legislative priorities. This role requires a dynamic professional capable of working independently and as part of a team under pressure, often maintaining a flexible schedule that may include extended hours, nights, and weekends.
