Under the direction of the City Attorney, this position performs responsible and complex legal casework within the Office of the City Attorney. The role is designed to apply professional judgment in providing legal advice and support, requiring complex problem-solving and skillful legal strategy.
The incumbent prepares and conducts criminal and civil prosecutions for violations of applicable State and City laws. Daily responsibilities include screening potential criminal prosecutions from police and the public, interviewing relevant individuals, and evaluating available evidence. The role involves drafting essential legal materials such as complaints, information, probable cause statements, arrest and search warrants, and subpoenas.
Beyond criminal matters, the position handles collection matters and represents the City in administrative proceedings. This includes supervising representation before the City's Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for enforcement actions and appeals, as well as appearing in district and appellate courts regarding orders from the ALJ. The role also entails appearing in court for motions, changes of plea, and sentencing, as well as reviewing probation performance for convicted defendants.
