About the Mission

The Correctional Managed Care team is dedicated to addressing the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD). Our goal is to ensure safe, effective, and timely medication therapy for these communities through rigorous drug utilization review and collaboration with healthcare professionals.

About the Role

As a Pharmacist, you will serve as a critical link in patient care, directing the mixing, packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications while supervising pharmacy technologists and learners. This role requires you to interpret complex medication orders, ensuring therapy is appropriate for diverse patient demographics ranging from neonates to geriatric patients. You will utilize professional judgment to review drug interactions and contraindications, making recommendations to prescribers to reduce risk and enhance treatment quality.

Your day will involve compounding and dispensing prescribed medications, detecting and reporting adverse drug events, and providing essential medication counseling to patients. You will also play a key role in training departmental staff, serving as a preceptor for pharmacy learners, and participating in quality assurance programs. The position demands the ability to function independently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining strict compliance with regulations, the 340B program, and security protocols.

Work Environment

This position may be located within the confines of a prison, jail, or juvenile detention center. The work environment includes standard pharmacy settings but may also involve exposure to occupational hazards such as communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous medications. You may encounter disoriented or combative patients and must be prepared to work weekends, shift rotations, after-hours, and on-call duties during emergencies. Travel to various correctional facilities and office locations is required. Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are mandatory.
