The Clinical Laboratory Assistant serves as a vital operational link within the laboratory, ensuring the seamless flow of specimens from collection to testing. This role exists to support testing personnel, maintain rigorous infection control standards, and uphold the integrity of laboratory documentation. You will work within a high-stress, busy environment where attention to detail and professionalism are paramount.
Your day involves a dynamic mix of tasks tailored to your specific department. In the Microbiology section, you will manage the receipt, processing, and distribution of samples, including setting up cultures manually and operating automated equipment. In Referral Testing, you will handle the complex logistics of shipping specimens to external facilities, ensuring strict adherence to OSHA, DOT, and FDA regulations. Additionally, you may be required to travel to outside nursing homes to collect specimens, requiring strong patient identification skills and valid auto insurance.
Beyond technical duties, you will act as a communication hub, answering phones and disseminating information to physicians, clinicians, and nursing staff. You will collaborate closely with team members in an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement, managing inventory, tracking temperatures, and performing quality control procedures. The role demands the ability to prioritize a fluctuating workload while maintaining meticulous records and adhering to all facility policies.
