The Clinical Dietitian positions (Levels I and II) serve as essential partners in patient care, delivering competent nutrition services tailored to specific practice areas. Whether in acute care or outpatient settings, dietitians in this role are responsible for documenting and executing comprehensive nutrition care plans that directly impact patient outcomes.
This role exists to bridge the gap between medical treatment and nutritional health. Dietitians work closely with the broader healthcare team and patient food service managers to ensure patient needs are met. The position requires independent action within departmental policies, including the ability to modify diets, order supplements, and manage enteral tube feedings once competency is established. In pediatric outpatient settings, the role also involves providing flexibility for evening appointments to accommodate patient schedules.
Your day will be dynamic, often taking place in a fast-paced environment where you must adapt to frequent changes and manage multiple priorities. You will engage in frequent and intense interactions with patients and their families, requiring clear communication and strong reasoning skills. Depending on your assignment, you may spend significant time standing, walking, or climbing steps to reach patients, while also performing detailed documentation and logical problem-solving to address complex nutritional needs.
The role extends beyond direct patient care to include professional development and team support. You will be expected to provide in-services to staff and adhere strictly to the Code of Ethics for the profession of dietetics. Travel to satellite clinics, such as Stony Point or Hanover, may be required as determined by your supervisor, ensuring consistent care across different locations.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or a related field from an accredited institution. For Clinical Dietitian I, candidates may be registry eligible but must pass the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam within the first six months of employment. Advancement to Clinical Dietitian II is contingent upon passing the RD exam and completing one year of service.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a diverse environment and adhere to the Code of Ethics. Specific requirements include CPR training for those in outpatient clinics and the ability to work weekends as assigned.
