The City of Maricopa is a small community with a population of approximately 1,250 residents. The city operates with a lean structure, contracting with Kern County for essential services such as police, fire, plan check, and building inspection. In-house operations focus on wastewater collection and treatment, refuse collection and disposal, animal control, public works, parks, and the issuance of business licenses and permits.

About the Role

This part-time City Administrator position (approximately 20 hours per week) offers a unique opportunity for a retired City Manager, Public Agency Manager, or senior department head to remain engaged in the profession. The role is designed for an experienced professional to learn how a small city navigates the modern state-driven agenda while providing critical leadership.

The City Administrator reports directly to the five-member elected City Council. Key responsibilities include supervising a team of six employees and administering an annual budget of $680,000, which encompasses governmental, proprietary, and special funds. Success in this role requires a deep understanding of California state law governing cities, general administration, finance, grant procurement, planning and housing law, engineering, and code enforcement.
