Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY, is a cornerstone of healthcare in the region with a rich history spanning over a century. As a pioneer in the area, the hospital introduced the first open-heart surgery in Kentucky in 1963 and continues to lead in advanced surgical procedures, cancer care, and heart and vascular services.
Our Cardiac Surgery team currently consists of two surgeons and four Physician Assistants (three surgical and one non-surgical). We are actively expanding our inpatient practice and are open to new graduates who possess a willingness to learn, alongside experienced professionals.
About the Role
We are seeking a Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant to join our inpatient practice at Saint Joseph Hospital. This is an inpatient-only position focused on providing comprehensive surgical support. You will serve as a Surgical/First Assistant on operating room cases, performing critical procedures such as harvesting veins for CABG, placing arterial lines, and inserting chest tubes.
The role covers a wide array of adult cardiac surgeries, including aortic aneurysm and valve surgeries, coronary bypass, minimally invasive heart surgery, valve repair and replacement, major aortic surgery, beating heart operations, arrhythmia surgery (the MAZE operation), cardiac assist devices, and ventricular restorative procedures.
Your schedule will be Monday through Friday, with one weekend of rounding per month. Weekend duties are limited to patient rounding. Call is required on a 1:4 rotation, specifically for surgeries. If called in for surgery, you will have a post-call day off. Weekend call is compensated in addition to your base pay.

CommonSpirit Health is looking for candidates who meet the following requirements: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state where work is being performed; Certificate of Authority and Standard Care Arrangement with collaborating physician; DEA Certificate with prescribing/dispensing privileges; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
