About the Organization

As a leader in the transportation industry, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) strives to attract and retain top-quality staff to ensure high-quality service to our customers. Metro achieves this goal by providing a work life that fosters the motivation and enthusiasm necessary to succeed. If you are looking for job satisfaction, excellent benefits, and professional development, Metro is where you want to be.

About the Role

The MetroBus Operator Training Program seeks Student Bus Operators to attend and successfully complete WMATA's comprehensive training course. In this role, you will be taught to operate commercial passenger buses on scheduled routes across the metropolitan area while providing courteous and professional customer service. This is a safety-sensitive position where you will learn and adhere to all safety and traffic rules, company regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure the well-being of customers, employees, and the public.

The program is designed for candidates with no prior experience required, though those with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or Learner's Permit with Passenger Bus and Air Brakes endorsements are highly desirable. During training, CDL permit holders with valid endorsements earn an hourly rate of $18, while CDL license holders with no restrictions earn $20. Upon successful completion of the program, you will assume a full-time regular MetroBus Operator position with an hourly rate of $29.49.

Hiring Process

Applications for this extended duration posting are continuously assessed. The evaluation process may include:

  • Skills and/or behavioral assessment
  • Personal interview
  • Verification of education and experience (including certifications and licenses)
  • Criminal background check (a conviction is not an automatic bar to employment)
  • Medical examination, including a drug and alcohol screening
  • Review of a current motor vehicle report

Equal Opportunity

WMATA is an equal-opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, status as a protected veteran, or any other status protected by applicable federal law. We welcome applications from both civilians and current/former military personnel.
