JCFPL is the largest municipal library in the State of New Jersey, serving the residents, students, and workers of Jersey City. With ten locations and growing, our collection comprises over 2.5 million print and digital items. Our staff of nearly 120 dedicated individuals reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of Jersey City, consistently ranked as the most diverse community in the United States. This role serves as a vital hybrid of Building Maintenance and Security at the Priscilla Gardner Main Library. Under the direction of the Building Superintendent, you will ensure the safety, cleanliness, and operational readiness of our public spaces. The position involves performing varied tasks ranging from cleaning and minor repairs to patrolling the grounds and protecting persons and property from harm, theft, and unauthorized entry.
You will be the first line of defense in maintaining order, issuing verbal warnings regarding rule violations, and removing individuals from the premises when necessary. Simultaneously, you will keep the library environment welcoming by cleaning public areas, restrooms, and windows, managing waste, and performing seasonal maintenance such as snow removal and landscaping. This role requires a proactive approach to observation, ensuring that fixtures are secure and that any significant conditions are addressed according to prescribed procedures.
Applicants must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license only if vehicle operation is necessary for essential duties. A SORA (Security Officer Registration Act) license is required; if not currently held, it must be obtained within the first 45 days of employment.
This vacancy is associated with a New Jersey Civil Service job title. The New Jersey Civil Service Commission requires all incumbents to possess and be prepared to verify the minimum experience and skills required for the associated Civil Service job title. This position is subject to residency requirements as set forth in the New Jersey First Act and is not available for work visa sponsorship.
