The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is an elite team of highly trained professionals dedicated to protecting America. Our daily mission is defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose to safeguard our borders, deter illicit activity, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity. As part of a workforce of over 60,000, Border Patrol Agents serve as the first line of defense, ensuring the security of the American people.
This is an opportunity to join a career in law enforcement that offers excitement, reward, and exceptional stability. As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will be a valued member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession. The role involves a dynamic day-to-day environment where you will detect and question individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, prevent the entry of undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, and interpret physical evidence of illegal entry.
Your work will take you to the front lines of national security, utilizing a variety of assets including vehicles, horses, vessels, and off-road vehicles to patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways. Whether conducting covert surveillance at night or performing checks on farms and traffic, you will be actively engaged in maintaining the integrity of our borders.
The journey to becoming a Border Patrol Agent begins with a rigorous selection process. After applying through the CBP Talent Network and USAJOBS, candidates are evaluated based on their resume, supporting documents, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Successful candidates will be invited to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. This training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency. Agents will also receive training to achieve proficiency in the Spanish language, a critical skill for the role.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border, such as Sierra Blanca, TX; Presidio, TX; and Lordsburg, NM. Relocation is required, and assignments may not align with a candidate's first-choice preference.
To support this mission, the USBP offers significant recruitment and retention incentives. Newly appointed agents may receive up to a $20,000 recruitment incentive, with the first $10,000 paid upon completing the Academy and the remainder awarded for accepting a prioritized location. Additionally, agents may qualify for up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over their first four years.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or genetic information. Veterans' Preference eligible candidates may be eligible for specific appointment pathways.
