The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is an elite team of highly trained professionals dedicated to protecting America. Our daily mission is defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose to safeguard our borders, deter illicit activity, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity. As part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), we offer a career in law enforcement that provides excellent pay, exceptional federal benefits, and long-term job stability.
As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will join a workforce of over 60,000 individuals committed to the USBP mission. This is a career ladder position where you will progress through grade levels (GL-5 to GS-12) upon successful completion of time-in-grade requirements. You will be part of a dynamic environment where you can make a tangible impact on national security.
Your day-to-day work involves a variety of assignments, including detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration laws, preventing the entry of undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, and interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry. You will patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways using diverse assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, and off-road vehicles. The role requires maintaining surveillance from covert positions, conducting farm and building checks, and performing traffic and transportation checks.
The selection process is rigorous and designed to identify the most qualified candidates. After applying through the CBP Talent Network and USAJOBS, candidates are evaluated based on their resume, supporting documents, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Successful candidates will be referred for selection and must meet specific citizenship, residency, and age requirements.
Once hired, all new agents are detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. This training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency. Agents will also receive training to become proficient in Spanish, a critical skill for the role.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include locations at the Southwest Border. Relocation is required, and assignments may not always align with a candidate's first-choice preference. To support this mission, the USBP offers significant recruitment and retention incentives. Newly appointed agents may receive up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives and up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over the first four years, particularly for accepting prioritized locations.
We are an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background. Veterans' Preference eligible candidates may be eligible for specific appointment pathways. Join us to be part of a team where your dedication to the law and the protection of the nation is valued and supported.
