The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is an elite team of highly trained professionals dedicated to protecting America. Our daily mission is defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose: safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. As a member of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), you join a workforce of over 60,000 individuals committed to law enforcement excellence.
This is an entry-level, full-time career opportunity for a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO). As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will serve as a valuable member of the federal law enforcement profession. Your day-to-day work involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, inspecting documents, and preventing the entry of undocumented noncitizens and smugglers.
The role requires maintaining surveillance from covert positions, interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry, and conducting various checks including farm, building, traffic, and city patrols. You will patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways using a diverse array of government assets, ranging from vehicles and horses to vessels, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
The selection process is rigorous and comprehensive. After submitting your application via the CBP Talent Network and USAJOBS, candidates are evaluated based on their resume, supporting documents, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Successful candidates will be referred for selection before reaching their 40th birthday (unless exempted by veterans' preference or prior federal service).
Upon hiring, all agents undergo approximately six months of intensive instruction at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. This formal training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency. Agents are also provided training to achieve proficiency in the Spanish language, which is essential for the role.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border, such as Sierra Blanca, TX; Presidio, TX; and Lordsburg, NM. Relocation may be required, and assignments may not align with a candidate's first-choice preference.
To support recruitment and retention, newly appointed agents may receive significant financial incentives. A recruitment incentive of up to $20,000 is available, with the first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the Academy and the remaining $10,000 awarded for accepting a prioritized location. Additionally, agents may qualify for a retention incentive of up to $40,000 distributed over their first four years.
