The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is an elite team of highly trained professionals dedicated to protecting America. Our daily mission is defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose to safeguard our borders, deter illicit activity, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity. We are seeking individuals ready to join a rewarding career in law enforcement that offers stability, excellent pay, and exceptional federal benefits.
As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will become a valuable member of a workforce of over 60,000. This is a career ladder position where you will work alongside a team committed to the USBP mission. You will be part of a dynamic environment where you can grow professionally, with opportunities for promotion to higher grade levels (GL-5 through GS-12) upon successful completion of each grade level without reapplying.
Your day-to-day work involves protecting the American people through a variety of assignments. You may detect and question individuals suspected of violating immigration laws, prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, and interpret physical evidence of illegal entry. Your duties may include performing farm, building, and traffic checks, as well as patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using diverse assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, and off-road vehicles. The role requires adaptability, as duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border, requiring potential relocation.
The application process begins by clicking the "Apply" button on this site, which links you to the CBP Talent Network registration page. Select "Border Patrol Agent" as your Position of Interest and complete the pre-screening questions. You will then receive links to the Border Patrol Agent Job Opening Announcements (JOAs) on USAJOBS to finalize your application.
Candidates are evaluated based on their resume, supporting documents (including transcripts), and the BPA Entrance Exam. Selected candidates will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction covering immigration laws, law enforcement operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency. Proficiency in Spanish is a requirement, and training is provided to achieve this.
For questions regarding the application process, please contact a recruiter through the U.S. Border Patrol careers page.
