The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is an elite team of highly trained professionals dedicated to protecting America. Our daily mission is defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose: safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. As a member of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), you will join a workforce of over 60,000 individuals committed to federal law enforcement excellence.
This is an entry-level career opportunity for a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO). As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will be part of a dynamic team that operates on the front lines of national security. Your day-to-day responsibilities involve detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, inspecting documents, and preventing the smuggling of noncitizens and contraband.
The role demands adaptability and resilience. You will patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways using a variety of assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, and off-road equipment. Operations often require maintaining surveillance from covert positions, interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry, and conducting checks in diverse environments ranging from remote farms to busy city streets. The work is physically demanding and requires the ability to make sound decisions under stress.
The journey begins with a rigorous application and evaluation process. Candidates are assessed based on their resume, supporting documents, and performance on the BPA Entrance Exam. Successful applicants are invited to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. This training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency. Additionally, agents receive training to become proficient in Spanish, a critical skill for the role.
