The Benefit Programs Specialist I serves as the entry-level position within our occupational group, dedicated to supporting community members in accessing vital social services and government assistance. In this role, you will work under close supervision while undergoing comprehensive training to determine eligibility for a variety of benefit programs. This position is designed as a developmental track; upon successful completion of the training program, supervisor recommendation, and director approval, you will be reclassified to the full-performance Benefit Programs Specialist II level, where you will independently manage eligibility duties and exercise professional judgment in accordance with agency practices and federal, state, and local laws.
Your primary focus will be conducting interviews with individuals to assess their eligibility for assistance and to re-determine their continuing eligibility. You will explain the nature of temporary assistance benefit programs, helping clients understand the reasons for their need and the available resources. A significant portion of your day involves processing applications for financial assistance and diversion, while clearly communicating client responsibilities, rights, and program availability.
You will evaluate the consistency and completeness of data collected, substantiating accuracy where indicated, and compute assistance plans. This includes determining the need for and amount of allowances for special circumstances. You will also assess social factors such as education, work experience, and levels of social functioning, as well as evaluate client employability and explore potential income sources. Success in this role requires the ability to communicate effectively, analyze information, and exercise sound judgment, discretion, and tact, particularly when navigating stressful situations or maintaining professional ethics regarding confidentiality.
As part of our commitment to community resilience, employees in this role must be prepared to staff emergency shelters during natural disasters and severe weather events.
We are an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, ensuring a positive and respectful working environment for all.
