The Department of Environmental Services (DES) at Arlington County is dedicated to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the community's infrastructure. The Auto Equipment Bureau serves as the backbone of this mission, providing comprehensive maintenance and repair services for the entire County and Schools fleet. This team ensures that everything from heavy fire apparatus and buses to utility trucks and snow-related equipment remains operational, supporting critical public services every day.
We are seeking skilled Automotive Mechanics to join our team in performing high-level mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs. You will be responsible for diagnosing and correcting issues across a diverse range of vehicle types, including diesel, gasoline, hybrid, and electric models. Your day-to-day work involves troubleshooting complex systems using computerized diagnostic tools, performing Virginia State Safety and Emissions inspections, and preparing vehicles for specific operational needs such as snow removal.
The role offers a dynamic environment where you will work on heavy construction and emergency vehicles. Depending on your level, you may also take on leadership responsibilities, such as mentoring junior mechanics, determining repair scopes, and acting as the Trades Manager in their absence. This is an essential position requiring flexibility to handle seasonal overtime, callbacks, and emergency responses during weekends and holidays.
Arlington County utilizes a continuous application process. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and interviews are scheduled for candidates whose qualifications best fit the team's needs. The process closes once the position is filled or a sufficient number of qualified applicants have been received.
