The Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University (MSU) is a rapidly growing, equity- and policy-focused unit located in Flint, Michigan. Born from a unique partnership in 2011 between MSU and the Flint community, the department was established to improve health through community-identified solutions, serve as an economic driver for Flint, and lead the nation in health equity-informed policy change.
Flint is a historic birthplace of community-based participatory research (CBPR). The department's governance, priorities, and faculty hiring are deeply integrated with the community; community members have served as presidents of the American Public Health Association and sit on faculty search committees. This radical experiment in community-partnered administration has resulted in over $175 million in extramural funding and impactful initiatives, including two NIH-funded Centers and the first city-wide unconditional cash prescription program for pregnant and postpartum people.
With a $25 million gift from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the department is expanding its capacity to support established researchers. The environment is energetic and mission-driven, offering a young department where "many things are possible" regarding leadership, mentorship, and the development of new programs like a health equity-focused postdoctoral T32 training program.
