The Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University (MSU) is a unique, community-partnered academic unit located in Flint, Michigan. Born from a 2011 proposal by the Flint community to create an academic department that would improve health through community-identified solutions, the unit began as a Division in 2015 and became a full Department in 2022. This radical experiment in community-partnered administration has been wildly successful, securing over $200 million in extramural funding and launching initiatives like the first city-wide unconditional cash prescription program for pregnant and postpartum people.
Flint is a birthplace of community-based participatory research (CBPR) and home to nationally recognized citizen scientists, including the first community representative to serve as President of the American Public Health Association. The department's governance, priorities, and faculty search committees are deeply integrated with the community, ensuring that research directly addresses the needs identified by Flint residents through over 1,000 surveys and 100+ interviews.
Supported by a $25 million gift from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the department offers a unique environment for established researchers to expand their portfolios with largely guaranteed salary coverage. The department is currently led by Founding Chair Jennifer Johnson, PhD, and is focused on expanding implementation science, continuing to innovate in community governance, and leveraging policy advocacy to move findings into action.
