The Assistant Teacher at Oak Hill's Hartford Classroom serves as a vital support partner to Special Education Teachers, working 35 hours per week from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This position is designed for individuals with a desire to serve people with disabilities, whether they are entering the education or direct care field with no prior experience or seeking a meaningful career change.
In this role, you will help students achieve social and academic development by reinforcing lessons through one-on-one and small-group review. You will foster student engagement and create a supportive learning environment by modeling appropriate behaviors and encouraging independence. Your day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with behavior management, tracking student progress, and supporting students in learning self-care techniques such as toileting, hygiene, eating, and dressing. You will also prepare classroom materials, supervise students during breaks and field trips, and assist teachers with ongoing observation and documentation.
Oak Hill is committed to providing excellent professional development opportunities, including tuition reimbursement and clear career pathways. As a union position, the role offers a competitive environment with paid training, education, and certifications (including CPR training) as necessary. The organization values staff recognition and appreciation, fostering a culture where employees can grow alongside the students they serve.
Applicants must hold a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old, and possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. A Public Service license with a "V" endorsement is required during the initial employment period to operate student transportation vehicles; Oak Hill facilitates the acquisition of this endorsement. This position is ideal for those passionate about making a difference in the lives of students with special needs.
