About the University

The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) is a public liberal arts and sciences university located on the Island of Hawaii. Recognized for its unique integration of cultural immersion and place-based research, the campus leverages the island's extraordinary geological, biological, and cultural diversity. As a comprehensive regional campus within the ten-campus University of Hawaii system, UH Hilo offers high-quality undergraduate and select postgraduate education. The university maintains distinctive strengths in marine science, geology, astronomy, and Hawaiian language revitalization while advancing research and scholarship that support community needs, environmental stewardship, Indigenous knowledge systems, and workforce development priorities for the State of Hawaii.

About the Role

The Department of Administration of Justice invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. While the area of specialization is open, the department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in law enforcement. This is an in-residence position within a department that offers a BA in Administration of Justice, including a fully online Law Enforcement Cohort Track specifically designed for law enforcement officers, as well as a Criminal Justice certificate.

The successful candidate will teach a broad range of criminal justice courses across undergraduate programs and develop new courses aligned with their area of specialization. Beyond the classroom, the role involves conducting scholarly research in one's area of expertise and disseminating findings in reputable outlets. The position also includes mentoring and advising students, serving on university committees, and engaging in departmental, institutional, and community service.

Hiring Process

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis, with the first review scheduled for or about August 28, 2026. The search will continue until the position is filled. Appointments are expected to begin in August 2026 or January 2027, pending position clearance and funding availability.

To apply, candidates must click the "Apply" button on the recruitment portal to create an account (if necessary) and submit the following required documents:

  • A cover letter addressing the ability to perform stated duties and explaining how minimum and desirable qualifications are met.
  • A current curriculum vita.
  • A statement of research interests.
  • A statement of teaching philosophy that includes evidence of successful teaching.
  • A list of three current references, including mailing addresses, email, and phone numbers.
  • Academic transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for the initial review; official transcripts are required prior to employment).

Please note that self-identifying photos should not be included. Social Security numbers and birth dates must be redacted from transcript copies. Diplomas will not be accepted. Documents issued from institutions outside the United States require a course-by-course analysis from a recognized credential evaluation agency. All minimum qualifications must be met by the closing date; incomplete applications will not be considered.

For inquiries, please contact Dr. Katherine Young at youngkat@hawaii.edu.

Equal Opportunity & Culture

The University of Hawai'i is an Equal Opportunity Institution committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in employment, including on the basis of veteran and disability status. The university complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and applicants requiring reasonable accommodations for the application or hiring process should contact the EEO coordinator directly. Employment is contingent on satisfying eligibility verification requirements, reference checks, and, for certain positions, criminal history record checks.
