This position is a strategic expansion of the Office of the Attorney General's criminal appellate capabilities, created in response to the Appeal of Right legislation enacted in 2022. As an Assistant Attorney General, you will serve as a primary advocate for the Commonwealth, representing the state in criminal appeals before the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
Your work will extend beyond standard appeals to include handling habeas corpus and other post-trial litigation across all judicial levels in both state and federal courts. Beyond courtroom advocacy, you will provide critical legal advice on criminal law and procedure matters, including navigating legislative issues before the Virginia General Assembly. This role demands a high degree of mobility, as some overnight travel will be required to fulfill these duties effectively.
