The Airport Building and Utilities Supervisor serves as a critical leadership figure within the City of Wichita, ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of complex commercial aviation facilities. This position bridges the gap between hands-on technical expertise and operational management, overseeing skilled maintenance staff and leading the repair, troubleshooting, and operation of essential systems including HVAC, plumbing, mechanical equipment, and facility infrastructure.
The role is vital to maintaining uninterrupted facility performance for passengers, tenants, airlines, FAA operations, and airport staff. In this fast-paced environment, the Supervisor coordinates preventive maintenance programs, responds to emergency needs, and supports snow and ice control operations, ensuring that infrastructure reliability remains a top priority.
This position operates within a dynamic airport setting that requires tolerance for unique environmental conditions. Duties may involve exposure to jet engine exhaust fumes, inclement weather, windy conditions, and high noise levels up to 100 decibels. The role requires traversing uneven terrain, climbing ladders, and working outdoors during critical weather events. Employees must be prepared to work extended hours and holidays during times of critical need.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a mandatory ten-year background investigation, which includes checks on employment history, driver's license, security threat assessment (STA), and criminal history records. Candidates must also complete a pre-employment physical, including drug screening, and pass required federal security background investigations by the DHS/Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to maintain airport security access.

Graduation from an accredited trade/technical school with an emphasis in commercial facility mechanical systems or HVAC systems. A City of Wichita approved and registered journeyman license in a building trade. Four (4) years of supervising maintenance operations within an airport, airline, transportation, hospital, manufacturing, or large commercial campus environment operating 24 hours per day. Three years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating commercial HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, rooftop units, pumps, and building automation systems.
