Established in 1952, this organization functions as a contemporary arts hub dedicated to showcasing exhibitions that highlight artists with connections to the state of Maine. The institution serves a broad audience by offering a year-round schedule of rotating displays alongside a comprehensive educational curriculum designed for all age groups. These programs include gallery talks, live performances, film screenings, and interactive workshops that encourage community engagement with the arts.
A significant expansion occurred in the summer of 2016 with the opening of a newly constructed facility designed by architect Toshiko Mori. Situated in downtown Rockland across from the Farnsworth Art Museum and next to the Strand Theatre, the 11,500-square-foot building provides 5,500 square feet of dedicated exhibition space. The site features three distinct galleries, a gift shop, a lecture hall, an ArtLab classroom, and an open public courtyard, creating a multi-functional environment for both artistic presentation and public gathering.
