City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide comprehensive support to students, classrooms, and the entire school community. Our mission is to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that equips them with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As a Student Success Coach and Mentor, you will serve as a City Year AmeriCorps Member, focusing on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and/or high school students. Your work will center on helping students achieve academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors within the school environment.
You will plan and monitor individual student progress while collaborating closely with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class student assistance. This role is designed for those who want to build themselves, give back, and are ready to change the world. While experience in these specific tasks is not required, you will receive 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year to prepare you for service. Throughout your term, you will work alongside partner teachers and school staff every step of the way.
Your day-to-day impact includes supporting academic coaching and interpersonal development through 1:1 and small group interactions. You will help students develop literacy and math skills, create behavior management systems, and foster interpersonal growth using proven strategies of learning, practice, reflection, and repetition. Additionally, you will collaborate with teachers to collect, record, and analyze student data to monitor progress and create engaging, safe, and healthy classroom spaces.
Beyond the classroom, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families. This may involve conducting extended day and virtual programming before, during, and after school, including academic enrichment, homework support, recreation, student clubs, service learning, and leadership development. You may also create, support, or co-lead events that recognize and appreciate student growth in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior.
