The YReads! Program is an exciting literacy and mentoring initiative designed for kindergarten through fifth-grade students across Pinellas County Schools in St. Petersburg, FL. The program utilizes curriculum-based literacy instruction to support struggling readers, focusing on phonetics, sight word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
As a YReads! Program Tutor, you will provide essential assistance and support to the program coordinator during program hours. Your primary mission is to ensure that outlined program goals and procedures are achieved while fostering a positive learning environment. You will be responsible for teaching basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YReads Coordinator, while also assisting with student supervision, maintaining order, and positively reinforcing good choices.
Your day will involve supporting students with daily needs, such as restroom assistance and transportation to and from the school. You will also oversee mandatory procedures for parent or guardian pick-ups and maintain necessary paperwork, including testing logs, volunteer sign-ins, and student sign-in/out records. Success in this role requires compassion and empathy for struggling readers, along with a genuine interest in learning about literacy intervention.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age and possess experience working with children in an educational environment. Tutoring experience is strongly preferred. All selected candidates must pass a 10-panel drug screen and clear a Level 2 background check through the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Additionally, tutors are required to attend abuse risk management training and adhere to all mandated abuse reporting requirements.
This is a part-time position offering $15.00 per hour. The schedule is approximately 15 hours per week, occurring after school hours four days per week.
