About the Role
The Upholstery Assembler is the hands-on builder behind Wieland Designs' finished products. In this role, you will assemble various parts, materials, and components to construct high-quality items that meet our rigorous standards. Success in this position requires flexibility, as you will accommodate the needs of other departments and perform work duties within the prescribed takt time for various product lines.
Day-to-Day Experience
Your work involves manipulating materials to conform to specific patterns and utilizing work-in-process tickets to guide assembly from start to finish. You will apply basic concepts of Toyota Production System (TPS), including one-piece flow and operator cycle time, to help eliminate waste from production processes. When interruptions occur, such as materials not fitting, you will be expected to problem-solve to keep the line moving.
Communication is key; you will interact with a variety of people, maintaining appropriate internal customer-supplier relations and keeping your supervisor informed regarding concerns or resource needs. You will also rotate with other operators on various job processes according to the department schedule, ensuring cross-training and operational continuity.
Work Environment
This position takes place in a non-air-conditioned production plant. The environment features low noise levels from small hand tools, though airborne dust particles are created from handling cloth fabrics. The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to stand for 8–10 hours per day at a workstation. You will perform repetitive movements, including grasping material and pulling with your hands while operating stapling or glue guns. The role requires lifting up to 25–40 pounds consistently, with occasional lifts up to 75 pounds. Good visual ability is essential to determine proper material alignment and distinguish color variations on various fabrics and materials.
