About the Office

The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California is committed to the pursuit of justice by aggressively advocating in federal court for the constitutional rights and inherent dignity of individuals who are charged with federal crimes and cannot afford their own lawyer.

About the Role

We are seeking a full-time trial paralegal to be stationed in our Los Angeles main office. This role provides a full range of support to attorneys across all types of federal matters, including pre-indictment cases, trials, appeals, and habeas cases. The position is designed for a candidate who is passionate about advancing our mission of providing high-quality criminal defense to indigent individuals.

In this role, you will work closely with defense teams to develop and implement case strategies tailored to the needs of each individual case. You will be responsible for managing multi-faceted discovery, creating chronologies and witness files, and preparing documents for experts. A significant portion of the work involves leveraging advanced technology to analyze, present, and communicate information to case teams, including the use of forensic tools and digital presentation software in the courtroom.

The role requires flexibility, as you must be available to work during regular business hours and, when necessary, during evenings and weekends. You will attend meetings with clients both in and out of custody and assist attorneys with bail processes. Success in this position requires strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to work independently, and a proactive approach to keeping up with emerging technology trends.

Hiring Process

To apply, please submit a letter of interest, your résumé, and three references. We will accept applications until March 22, 2026, or until the position is filled. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis, and the position may be filled before the deadline; therefore, priority will be given to early applicants. Please note that no phone calls will be accepted.

A background investigation is required as a condition of employment. Additionally, in line with current appropriations law, applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents seeking citizenship.

Equal Opportunity

The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California is committed to equal opportunity in the workplace. All applicants, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or age, are encouraged to apply.
